We expect that our services will include the criminal defense of protesters arrested for a variety of so-called disruption of police activity crimes. We expect to intervene whenever possible with law enforcement, the district attorney's office or other agencies to prevent future violations from occurring.
But one of our greatest tool in this community is to let it be known to would be violators of constitutional rights that we will file all supported complaints to the state and federal departments of justice who are obligated to investigate and act on the charges that could bring civil or criminal charges against the violating party, be it an entire police department or individual officer or anyone else who violates a person's constitutional rights.
We also will arrange to file state or federal civil suits asking for money damages against the violator, which often is the strongest deterrent in stopping the constitutional infringements. Nothing is set in stone and the Center is open to any and all suggestions and criticism about its approach to protect the rights of the people of Humboldt.
